What does “daylighting” mean?

Daylighting, also known as potholing, is the process of exposing underground utilities or infrastructure using a vacuum excavation process. Hand digging can be a slow, labor intensive, and a dangerous process and isn’t ideal for daylighting. Using a backhoe or hand digging can result in additional costs and restoration, making it an expensive option.

Daylighting Made Simple

PowerVac uses state of the art hydrovac trucks to complete daylighting projects fast. Hydro excavation provides the fastest, safest, and most complete excavation possible. Hydro excavation can easily expose underground utilities without any risk. It is a non-mechanical and non-destructive process used for daylighting. PowerVac’s advanced hydro excavator trucks use a powerful combination of water pressure and a vacuum to quickly remove soil during excavation.

Contractors can safely expose utilities using pressurized water and a handheld wand. Soil is easily removed in a precise way and removed by a vacuum hose that deposits it into a nearby tank.  This allows for the location, type, and depth of the utility to be accurately identified.

The Benefits of Hydro Excavation

The hydro excavation process allows daylighting projects to be completed faster, more accurately, and safer than with traditional methods. It does less damage to the surrounding area and minimizes the time and money needed for restoration. Buried natural gas and petroleum pipelines can be uncovered without the risk of puncture when hydro excavation is used. Fiber optic cables, telephone lines, water mains, and other utilities can e effectively located without any damage. Contractors can use hydro excavators to dig with precision, making it a less invasive method for daylighting.
