Sanitary Sewer System

It’s important to know a few things to start. First, what’s the sanitary sewer system? And, is it different from a catch basin? There is a common misconception about these two systems. They both contribute similar things, are not the same.

For starters, Sanitary sewer systems carry all the waste from your property to the city sewer system. Typically, this pipe runs from inside a structure and ties into the municipal sewers at a point under the nearest street.

These pipelines are critical foundations that ensure proper carriage of daily wastes to the nearest treatment plant.

Further, these sewage systems remove contaminants before being released into bodies of water. Also, it’s important to properly seal the sanitary sewer pipes. This will prevent any sewage from leaking out prior to going through the purification treatment.

Storm Drains

Now that we have a more clear understanding of the function of sewer systems, we can focus on storm drains. Catch basins are another name for storm drains. These are the curbside inlets you see on streets or in parking lots designed to carry rainwater.

Once the rainfall flows through the opening of the storm sewer, it travels through underground pipes and drains to the ocean or nearby creeks, canals or rivers, as mentioned. Additionally, this is untreated water. Consequently, if these are not properly cleaned the additional sediment, pollutants and debris will make it into our water systems.

Additionally, storm drains can also experience backups and blockage if not cleaned properly. It’s important if you have you have a parking lot storm drain you’re responsible for, to make sure that you know when your last cleaning was.

PowerVac Cleaning Services

Due to the importance of your sanitary and sewer systems, it’s important to have them cleaned often. These cleanings and additional maintenance allow them to function efficiently so you don’t have to worry. If blockages and backups occur they can lead to costly repairs or replacements.

For an idea of the services we offer at PowerVac, see below:

  • Sanitary System Cleaning: First, we use a video inspection technique to determine the cause and location of the backup. Then, once we know exactly what the issue is we can clear it using commercial grade cabling machines for root cutting or high pressure jetting for grease removal. If a section of your mainline needs replacement, we can provide pricing.
  • Root RemovalIf roots are left unchecked, they will completely fill the line. A high pressured root cutting jet head removes the roots and cleans the line to eliminate this issue. Then, a robotic camera performs an inspection insuring the invasive tree roots are removed and the flow is properly restored.
  • Catch Basin CleaningThe frequency of your catch basin maintenance and cleaning will depend on the depth of the basin and how much material is collected within the basin. For instance, it may be necessary to have your catch basins cleaned every fall season if your property is surrounded by several trees.
  • Calcium RemovalOver time, the minerals flowing through your sewer system deposit themselves within your pipes, restricting drain flow and eventually causing a complete blockage. More often than not, these blockages are due to calcium deposits. This requires high pressure water removal.
